OUR HISTORY

Castlerea Golf Club was founded on 9th September 1905. The course was originally located on the Ballymoe Road at Harristown. It moved to its present location at Clonalis in 1907. Today, the club continues to develop the course and grounds, with additional lands purchased as recently as 2007. This new development is in close proximity to the famous Clonalis House, the historic seat of the O’Conor Don family.

CASTLEREA MEMBERS

Over the years Castlerea Golf Club has produced many fine and successful golfers. Bertie Briscoe was a member when winning the West of Ireland in 1928 and 1931. Miss Audrey O’Donoghue, whose father was a founder member of the club, represented Ireland from 1948 to 1953 and subsequently became Irish team captain. Rupert de Lacy Staunton was the winner of the South of Ireland in 1965 and 1972. He played for Ireland from 1963 to 1973 during which time Ireland won the European Championship for the first time. Rupert also captained the Irish team for a number of years and was a Walker Cup selector. His father Maurice was president of the GUI in 1974.

We deeply appreciate the families who generously  sponsor competitions each year in memory of their dearly departed loved ones.

CAPTAINS' ADDRESS

Captains’ Address  by 2025

Address by 2025 Men’s Club Captain Alan Devine & Women’s Club Captain Ruth Sullivan

Dear Fellow Members of Castlerea Golf Club,

It is with great excitement and honour that we take on the roles of Men’s Club Captain and Women’s Club Captain for 2025. We are truly grateful for the support and well-wishes you’ve extended to us as we embark on what promises to be an exciting golfing year ahead.

Castlerea Golf Club is privileged to have two exceptional assets: our magnificent golf course and our loyal, dedicated members. As we look ahead to 2025, we want to emphasise the continued importance of these two pillars—our course and our people—in the ongoing success of the Club.

We also extend a warm welcome to visitors and societies, and encourage all to share their positive experiences at Castlerea Golf Club with colleagues, friends, and family. Your recommendations help us to promote our wonderful Club and ensure we continue to thrive.

The impacts of storms Darragh and Éowyn in late 2024 and early 2025, respectively, threatened to get our 2025 golfing year off to an uncertain start.  However, efficient and significant course recovery efforts executed in February 2025 paved the way for all parts of our beautiful course to be fully open and playable in time for our Captains’ Drive-in held on Sunday, 9th of March – in glorious sunshine.  While the course still bears some scars from fallen and removed trees, much of the heavy lifting is done and these scars will fade.

Our course, including the recently redeveloped greens complexes at holes 3 and 6, provide a fantastic challenge for golfers of all levels. In addition to maintaining and expanding our membership, continued progress and success at Castlerea Golf Club relies heavily on the voluntary contributions of our members’ time and energy. Whether it’s serving on committees or helping with various initiatives throughout the year, please consider how you can best contribute to the ongoing success of our fine club.

We recognise the importance of sponsorship in ensuring the smooth running of our golfing season. We are incredibly grateful to the local families and businesses who sponsor our golf competitions for their continued generosity and support, and, in turn, we encourage all members to support our sponsors’ businesses wherever possible.

As we look to the future, supporting the next generation of golfers remains a top priority. We are committed to creating an environment where juniors and beginners feel welcome and valued, and where their love for the game can grow. We extend our best wishes to all of our inter-club teams and managers for success in the year ahead and we encourage everyone to get involved.

We would also like to remind all members, and prospective members, that if you have any questions regarding membership options, please feel free to contact our Membership Convenor. We, as Club Captains, are on hand to help and ensure that everyone has the best possible golfing and social experience at Castlerea Golf Club in 2025.

Finally, 2025 marks a very special year as we celebrate Castlerea Golf Club’s 120th anniversary. We are honoured to represent our great Club during this milestone year and we look forward to welcoming both members and visitors to enjoy the fairways and clubhouse throughout the year.

Looking forward to a year of continued success, growth, and camaraderie, we thank you once again for your support.

Yours in Golf,

Alan Devine, Men’s Club Captain

Ruth Sullivan, Women’s Club Captain
