OUR HISTORY
Castlerea Golf Club was founded on 9th September 1905. The course was originally located on the Ballymoe Road at Harristown. It moved to its present location at Clonalis in 1907. Today, the club continues to develop the course and grounds, with additional lands purchased as recently as 2007. This new development is in close proximity to the famous Clonalis House, the historic seat of the O’Conor Don family.

CASTLEREA MEMBERS
Over the years Castlerea Golf Club has produced many fine and successful golfers. Bertie Briscoe was a member when winning the West of Ireland in 1928 and 1931. Miss Audrey O’Donoghue, whose father was a founder member of the club, represented Ireland from 1948 to 1953 and subsequently became Irish team captain. Rupert de Lacy Staunton was the winner of the South of Ireland in 1965 and 1972. He played for Ireland from 1963 to 1973 during which time Ireland won the European Championship for the first time. Rupert also captained the Irish team for a number of years and was a Walker Cup selector. His father Maurice was president of the GUI in 1974.
We deeply appreciate the families who generously sponsor competitions each year in memory of their dearly departed loved ones.

CAPTAIN'S ADDRESS
Address by Men’s Club Captain Anto Kelly & Women’s Club Captain Pauline Glynn
Dear Members of Castlerea Golf Club.
It is a great privilege to represent Castlerea Golf Club as elected Captains of both the Men’s Club and the Women’s Club. It is an honour that has been bestowed onto its members over the last 125 years. We are both truly grateful and would like to thank everyone for all their support and well wishes for 2026.
We would like at this time to thank our outgoing Captains, Alan and Ruth for a sterling job over the last year.
Like many other sporting organisations, our members and facilities are our most important assets. This makes Castlerea Golf Club what it is today. Castlerea Golf Club is a place of sportsmanship, friendship, unity, and a great club to be part of.
Here at Castlerea Golf Club, we welcome all Societies and visitors to come and play our challenging 9-hole course, which is located just beside the town, close to the grounds of the historic Clonalis House. We offer our practice range, our putting green and our beautiful club house where you can sit, relax, and take in the panoramic views of the course. We thank our maintenance staff and our vast group of volunteers that help with the upkeep of our great course and clubhouse.
Our committees are the backbone of the Castlerea Golf Club. As mentioned previously, we appreciate the loyalty and commitment of our members that volunteer to help maintain and run the Club. They bring so much skilled based professionalism, it makes our role as Captains so much easier. Thanks to all involved as we continue to work together to make Castlerea Golf Club one of the best 9-hole courses in Connacht.
We have a great Get into Golf beginners programme and a vibrant Junior Program here at the club. We endeavour to nurture our beginners and junior members and encourage and help them to achieve their golfing goals. Our beginners and juniors get a vast amount of help and tuition from volunteers and instructors here at the Club. We hope that one day both our juniors and beginners will represent Castlerea Golf Club in various team events.
This year the club is hosting a Connacht Boys under-16 competition on the 2nd and 3rd of July, which we are looking forward to.
We wish all our Inter Club Teams and Managers the very best of luck this year in all competitions.
We wish to thank and recognise the importance our sponsors, who have remained loyal and committed to our Club in supporting our weekly competitions during our golfing year. We encourage all members to support our sponsor’s businesses whenever possible.
As your 2026 Captains, we are here to help with any enquiries regarding membership, or anything that will help make your golfing experience better. Please do not hesitate to contact us or any of the committee members and we will be happy to help.
We wish you all a successful golfing year here at Castlerea Golf club and we look forward meeting you all in the coming months.
Thank you all for your support.
Yours in golf,
Anto Kelly, Men’s Club Captain
Pauline Glynn, Women’s Club Captain
